Green Energy UK Review of Business Tariffs

Another green only company that offers a green energy solution is from a company that simply call themselves “Green Energy UK” and they offer a business only solution as well. Here’s our review:

So who are Green Energy UK ?

Although through the name alone you would be led to believe that a company calling themselves green energy would be doing just that, ie: supplying completely 100% green energy to your small business but the structure is not exactly as it seems. If you take out a contract with this company you still get supplied with traditional electricity and gas from existing resources through their partner opus energy. What they do though is to supply green energy at the consumption rate you use and supply it to the national grid on your behalf. There are two main tariffs to choose from and although the prices may be slightly higher than what your business may be used to you can be sure that additional renewable sourced energy is being purchased on your behalf.

Green Energy Tariffs

There are two main tariff options to choose from and this depends on the sources you choose to be purchased on your behalf and sold back to the national grid.

  • Deep Green Tariff – this matches your consumption 100% with green renewable sources and all of these qualify for the ROCS scheme – renewable obligation certificates – currently the fuel mix on this tariff is 55% from waste generation, 24% from hydro electric power, 12% from biomass, 7% from wind farms and 2% other.
  • Pale Green Tariff- this is a real green tariff where no electricity is purchased from brown energy sources. The electricity is purchased directly from combined heat and power generators (CHP) which have accreditation from ofgem

Both of these tariffs are 100% climate change levy exempt.

Selling Your Renewable Energy

As part of an overall government scheme with regards to feed in tariffs, if your business generates any type of renewable energy you can sell it directly back to the green energy company. The rates will be the same as generated by the industry regulator ofgem.

Shares in Green Energy

Although not a top reason to choose a provider currently for the first 100,000 new customers buying electricity and/ or gas from this company they receive 400 shares in the PLC version of the company. You have to stay 3 years on your tariff to keep the shares (although you can move and switch to another provider at any time but forfeit your shares) they are not currently tradeable and there is no information on how many total shares are issued and to their worth. However, you will become a small shareholder in this organisation.

Green Energy UK’s Renewable Sources List

Green energy have a variety of sources where they get their renewable energy from and this includes and is not limited to wind farms (large and small), solar panels, small scale hydro electric power, biomass plants, waste energy, anaerobic digestion and combined heat and power sources. There are many small scale projects that this company is investing in as well as buying in renewable sources if they can’t match the demand.

Getting a Quote

Domestic customers can see what it would cost them from their website but unfortunately business customers need to call the company with their meter details etc so it may take a little longer to find out the pricing and tariff options from Green Energy UK PLC
