Renewable Energy Degree Programmes in Abundance
If you thought that the world was moving towards renewable energy programmes with great force then you were right and now many universities offers such degree programmes for those that are so inclined.
The green renewable energy degree programmes are now in full force and you can take such courses in schools and universities around the world including the USA, UK, Sweden and Australia.
These are designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge for clean and renewable energy understanding and the demand for such skills will only likely grow in the years to come especially with the EU and UK commitment to reducing the carbon emissions by 20%+ over the coming decade.
These programmes also provide students with an understanding of the new green fuels that are in existence including new biofuels, fuel cell systems and hydrogen. The main programme in Europe is geared towards engineers and is offered by the European Renewable Energy Research Centres Agency (EUREC) for the European Master in Renewable Energy and is split into three parts.
- The core – which provides education into the main fuel sources including hyropower, wind, solar and bio energy and is a theoretical course which can be taken in English, Spanish or French. For those in the UK this part of the course is offered at Loughborough University.
- The specialisation – to focus on one technology including wind power, energy conservation, hybrid and bio energy or photovoltaics and is taught in English. The UK element can be taken at the University of Northumbria in the photovoltaics specialism.
- A project – to show what you have learned.
Generally the entire course runs for about two years. The degree obtained is offered by the university in which you obtain it and is designed to be recognised by all EU member states. Each year this entire course has a maximum of 50 students taking part. The entry requirements are quite tough and you should have already a physics degree and four years experience in this field either as work experience or within study. For the UK universities there are also entrance exams which take place.
The course fee is €7,000 payable in three installments and there are some scholarships around that may cover these fees although most students will fund the course themselves or through their employer.
Other degree programmes are available around the world as follows:
- MSc in low carbon energy at Lancaster University
- MSc in renewable energy at Stellenbosch University in South Africa
- BSc in renewable energy engineering at the Oregon Institute of Technology
- MSc in renewable energy at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC
- MSc in environmental engineering with specialisation in renewable energy sources at University of Science and Technology – AGH in Krakow, Poland
- MSc in renewable energy at Cape Town University
- Masters diploma and post graduate certificate in renewable energy at Newcastle University in the UK
- MSc in sustainable energy engineering at Aalborg University in Denmark
- MSc in renewable energy from Murdoch University in Perth
So as you can see if you want to get a degree in renewable energy to further your career or just improve your knowledge there are many colleges, schools and universities across the world that offer you this choice.
