Saving Costs for Larger Companies Through HH Meters
Every large business in the UK will have their electricity measured through a half hourly meter. These as the name suggests take readings each half hour and we show how this data can save you money.
The UK government under the Labour adminstration mentioned that they would roll out smart meters to every home in the next few years or so. This may not now happen although some energy companies are undertaking their own marginal roll out but the business customer has had this option forced on them perhaps for many years. These are installed for large users of electricity. There are of course no estimated bills with these meters and the energy provider and the company concerned can use the data collected for many purposes – including saving money.
How do HH meters work ?
It’s simple – instead of a person coming around every so often to read your meter which will generate a bill the HH meters send data back automatically to the power company that is providing the electricity and they have the data. It’s transmitted generally via mobile phone signals and is sent every 30 minutes. The power company has this data and so can the business owner.
Why have the data in the first place ?
Knowing just how much consumption is being used at each point in the day could help you save money. If you are able to compare the information to previous data points or just day by day hour by hour you may be able to see where consumption looks high but perhaps shouldn’t be – during the night time period is an obvious place to start if the business is effectively shut down where no power or minimal usage is undertaken.
How can I monitor this data ?
There are many paid and free software packages that are available that integrate with the data being obtained and you can then analyse what you received. You’ll also be able to produce various charts and reports over periods of time to show overall trends but also peaks and troughs.
If you don’t monitor the data you receive then this is something that you should look into. There is plenty of information online to help you through this process and it could save your company thousands in reduced consumption over time. Your energy company could be the first place to investigate software as most will be able to offer desktop and online versions that they have developed for customers over many years in the business.
