How To Read A Business Gas Meter

Find your meter type below for step-by-step instructions on how to read it:

Dial Meter

A dial meter usually has 5 or more dials, but you only need to read the first 5, from left to right. Write down the number that each dial is pointing to. If you find that the pointer is between two numbers, always write the lower number, unless it’s between 0 and 9, in which case write down 9. If the pointer is directly on a number, underline it. If the dial next to the underlined number is between 0 and 9, subtract one from the underlined number.

Digital Meter (Electronic Meter)

A digital meter has a digital display with one set of numbers. Read the first five numbers, from left to right, including any zeros, but ignore any numbers after the decimal point or if they are in red.

Imperial Meter

An imperial meter has four main numbers. Read the first four numbers, from left to right, including any zeros at the beginning, but not any numbers in red, or any of the numbers after a red number.

Smart Meter

A smart meter automatically sends any gas meter readings directly to your supplier, so you don’t have to do a manual reading. If your supplier specifically requests a manual reading, simply take the same steps as a digital meter.

How To Check Your Gas Meter Status

To check your gas meter status, as in whether or not it has any supply, you will need to find your MPRN, which is usually found on a recent bill.

You can check your status on the Citizens Advice website, where you can also find out your MPRN if you are new to a premise and don't have access to a recent bill.

Your MPRN status determines which stage you are at for gas meter installation. Check the table below to see what your next steps are:

MPRN Status Definition Next Steps
Live You have a gas meter, and the gas pipe connection is ready for supply. Compare Gas Prices
New You have arranged for a new MPRN to be assigned, and there are plans in place for your gas pipe to be installed. 3 - 4 weeks before your gas pipe is installed, the new MPRN can be activated for a gas meter installation. Schedule A Gas Meter Installation Today
Disconnected Unfortunately, there is no gas pipe connection as your current MPRN has been commissioned. We call this “Siteworks” You need to speak to your network operator to generate a new MPRN with your DNO and fix your connection. Find A Network Operator
Removed No gas meter is currently on your property, as it was removed. You must schedule a gas live/dead check to fix this. You will also need a GT1 Survey with your DNO if you require a meter larger than a U6 (G4) diaphragm meter.

How Much Does a Commercial Gas Meter Cost?

A gas meter installation could cost you up to £160, and in others, gas meter installation is free; pricing usually varies between suppliers. A commercial gas meter for installation will depend on how much gas consumption you need and any special requirements associated with the meter.

Some sectors require more energy than most, for example, a business in farming and agriculture versus a smaller retail property.

Here are some points to consider when working out how much your gas meter installation will cost:

Gas Meter Size:

The size of your gas meter is wholly dependent on your average annual consumption. Our team of gas meter experts will be able to determine which gas meter you will need for your business, and tell you how much it costs to install.

Special Gas Meter Requirements:

Certain gas meters need special requirements, like a concrete base or a kiosk to house them. These special requirements should be factored in when working out the cost of installation.

Finding The Right Gas Contract:

We can secure you a free installation when you arrange a meter installation through us! Our experts can also find you the best tariffs and rates to guarantee you won't be paying any more than you should.
