Business Options from Scottish Power
There is an extensive range of options for small and larger businesses in the UK from ScottishPower; here’s our review.
The range of options for business electricity from ScottishPower (SP) is on a par with the other major energy companies in the UK. Their tariffs target both small business owners as well as larger corporations. Unfortunately you can’t obtain instant pricing directly from their website, but they have a UK based call centre who handles these enquiries.
Information about the Company
Despite the name, you can be supplied energy from this group no matter where you’re based within the UK. They already provide energy to over 200,000 UK businesses and five million domestic customers. The range of products includes a green renewable tariff at no extra cost.
The company was born from the 1990s privatisation of the UK and was integrated from the original Scottish Electricity Board. Currently the Spanish energy company Iberdrola owns the business which also has MANWEB as a subsidiary. Their current fuel mix versus the market is shown in the graphic below.
The Products on Offer to Businesses
There are two main targets which are small businesses and larger businesses with both having specific options for house builders. Over one third of new home connections are with SP. You can choose standard gas and electric with options for green renewable power at no additional cost.
There are six main payment methods available including:
- Telephone and internet banking.
- Payment at the Post Office.
- Debit and credit card payments.
- And a choice of direct debit options.
Getting a quote is easy as all you need to do is to complete their online form and someone from their team will call you back. Other energy companies allow you to get instant online quotes from their website so by opting for this choice may take some time. However, in some areas of the country SP’s prices are the most competitive. So either talk to a broker who has a “whole of market” data comparison or get direct quotes to ensure you don’t miss the lowest rates.
Saving money with ScottishPower Business
Like all other business suppliers you can save additional money on your bills by choosing from some of these options:
- Paying a fixed amount each month via direct debit or standing order.
- Undertaking energy efficiency measures via their SMART pack (although you don’t need to be a customer to access this information).
- Choosing to manage your account online via their self service website. You can enter your meter readings to ensure your bills are accurate. There are dedicated account options for all members of your staff to manage your records. You’ll also be able to view all your bills online and actually pay them by debit card if you haven’t set up a direct debit.
The Range of tariffs
There are many options to choose from to match your meter consumption to the correct and least expensive tariff. SP offers standard one year fixed rate contracts, but two and three year terms are also available. You can choose from one of the following:
- Standard rates.
- Economy 7.
- Evening and weekend tariff.
- Evening and weekend economy 7.
- Catering tariff.
- All off peak tariff.
- White meter 6.
- Green source renewable energy.
All tariffs come with a fixed standing charge each day, which ranges from 25p to 55p per day. This is more expensive than some other network providers, so compare the overall cost on an annual basis to see which is cheapest.
Data Services for High Use Customers
For larger businesses, there is the option of signing up for their data services. All your half hourly data is fed directly back to ScottishPower for viewing and analysing the raw data or key graphical data online. This means you can view and analyse your business energy consumption figures in real time site by site. This provides you with information to reduce your consumption and thus your bills.
The option for green energy is also available. Choosing this renewable energy tariff won’t carry a premium and will also exempt your business from the climate change levy (CCL). The name of this tariff is “Green Source” and uses energy from renewable sources such as wind power, hydro and biomass to reduce your CO2 emissions at no extra cost. You can get an instant quote for ScottishPower business electricity from their website.
